Created for BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival in collaboration with Auckland Council, this large-scale projection mapping installation transformed the iconic Auckland Town Hall into a living canvas of light, colour and storytelling.
Designed to celebrate the richness of Diwali and Auckland’s Indian community, the work combined cinematic motion design, architectural 3D projection mapping and cultural symbolism at monumental scale. Animated elephants and tigers moved across the façade, intricate Rangoli patterns unfolded through the architecture, glowing Diya lamps illuminated the building, and a radiant gold temple emerged from the structure.
The project reinforced Auckland’s position as a multicultural city embracing ambitious public art and creative technology, while demonstrating how projection mapping can transform civic architecture into emotionally resonant shared experience.
The initial part of my job was creating the projection map for the Auckland town hall. The main challenge was to map two faces of the building to create a 3D projection map that would curve around the front facet of the building.
The second and most significant portion of this job was creating the 8 minute looping animation with seamless transitions between 8 individual Diwali themed animated scenes. I used a mixture of Gen AI, After Effects, Cinema 4D and Red Giant Particular to create the content. This job took 1.5 months to complete from concept to final install.
